ASL SPECIALIST
DIRECTOR OF INTERPRETING - DIRECTOR OF ARTISTIC SIGN LANGUAGE - CASTING CONSULTANT - WORKSHOPS
As a seasoned consultant, I specialize in casting around deaf talent, ensuring authentic representation and inclusivity in theatrical productions. I offer expertise in translating scripts for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences, working closely with creative teams to maintain the integrity of the story. My experience includes collaborating with interpreters to enhance interpreted shows, ensuring that both deaf and hearing audiences have a seamless and engaging experience. My goal is to bridge communication and cultural gaps, fostering a more inclusive theater environment for all.
Director of Interpreters: This role, often held by a deaf person, supports the interpreting team in effectively conveying the story through ASL. Interpreters are tasked with expressing the artistic choices made on stage, and Joshua Castille draws on his acting and storytelling expertise to guide interpreters in dividing character assignments. Since the number of interpreters typically doesn’t match the number of actors, it’s rare for each interpreter to represent just one character. Josh ensures that the transitions between interpreters are smooth and aligned with the action, maintaining clarity and consistency.
Director of Artistic Sign Language: Usually filled by a deaf individual, this role involves translating scripts into ASL or crafting gestures that suit the story’s context. Joshua uses his acting background to create translations driven by character intentions and tactics, ensuring that each translation reflects a clear point of view. This role is vital in the development of productions incorporating sign language, ensuring that ASL is woven seamlessly into the storytelling.
Casting Consulting: Having a casting consultant who can sign is an invaluable asset. Joshua’s ability to recognize the nuances in actors' sign choices helps directors see how signing styles, regional variations, and fluency impact character development. His insights into these elements empower directors to make informed casting decisions or adjust their vision to align with the strengths of deaf talent.
Workshops: Joshua offers a variety of workshops, many of which are focused on theater but are applicable across fields. His workshops help interpreters develop essential skills, like using their bodies as communication tools and aligning with the messaging of the speaker. These skills, rooted in theatrical principles, enhance the interpreting process and create a deeper connection between the speaker and the interpreter.
“Joshua Castille’s, approach to DASL work is that of a true artist. With his acting and directing background he understands how to make the vision and integrity of a show come alive through ASL with creativity, fun, and innovation. His solutions to interpretation challenges are brilliant. Joshua’s feedback is precise and clear, and will easily take your work to the next level. When a consumer comes to compliment your work, you’ll find yourself saying, “Thanks! That was Josh’s idea”
“I know Josh to be one of ASL’s innovators. His thorough understanding of and love for the theatre, combined with his panache for using just the right sign/combinations of signs to express a concept, provides those for whom he consults a best case scenario, every time. Whether I’ve needed comprehensive direction on a project, or just a tip to lead me in the right direction to engage my own creativity, my trust in Josh’s skilled handiwork has proven to be the ultimate in DASL/ASL interpreter symbiosis.”
“Working with Josh gives me so much creative inspiration and his rich teachable moments push my mind beyond the limits. Every experience is unforgettable. ”
